Yesterday I spotted the first rose of summer in my garden.
A soft pink bloom on a bush that I bought and planted only one year ago. This will be its first settled season.
This morning I went out for a closer inspection and on one floribunda bush only – counted 65 buds waiting to fabulously open.
Yes, Margaret Roberts is flourishing in my little garden – and yes, the photo in this post is from my garden and not a catalogue!
On introspection, I wondered if we often just survive or do we flourish in our little spot of life?
To flourish is to be successful, healthy and to grow luxuriantly … flourishing plants (if I think of my rosebush) are usually a source of joy to others as well.
Those who flourish are in a state of activity or production and may reach a height of development or influence.
A quick search confirmed for me the basic requirements of what it takes for a plant to flourish. You can take the metaphor further yourselves. Are these conditions pre-existing or do we have to ensure that they are provided for and are in place?
- Suitable grounding and good roots
- The PH level of the water and the amount of mineral salts that can be absorbed
- Supplementation – a little extra input never hurt anyone …
- The right climate for growth and well-being
Sometimes patience is also required, maybe even for a season or so.
Are you thriving or surviving? What do you think are the essential ingredients for flourishing in our tough environment today?

Such a beauty!
Just love this time of the year when everything starts to come to life again. Beautiful rose!
